The Path to the Fraternity
How to Become a Mason
Some men are surprised that no one has ever asked them to become a Mason. It does not work that way. The path begins not with an invitation, but with a question you ask of yourself.

The First Move Is Yours
For hundreds of years, Masons have been forbidden to ask others to join the fraternity. We may speak of what Masonry is and what it does — but we cannot ask, much less pressure, anyone to join. Becoming a Mason is a serious, lifelong commitment, and no man should be talked into such a decision. The desire must arise within you, of your own free will.
Ask for a Petition
When a man decides he wishes to become a Mason, he asks a Mason for a petition. He fills it out and returns it, and that brother carries it to his lodge — the formal beginning of the journey.
The Investigating Committee
The Master of the lodge appoints a committee to visit with the man and his family. They learn a little about him and why he wishes to become a Mason, tell him and his family about Masonry, and answer their questions. The committee then reports back to the lodge.
The Ballot
The lodge votes upon the petition. If the vote is affirmative — and it usually is — the lodge will contact the candidate to begin his path through the degrees of Masonry.
